A cenote, derived from the Mayan word "dzonot," is a natural sinkhole formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock, revealing groundwater underneath. These geological wonders are prevalent throughout the Yucatán Peninsula, often utilized by the ancient Maya for water sources and ceremonial rituals. With over 6,000 cenotes in the region, each with its unique characteristics, exploring these natural marvels is a must during your visit to Tulum.

There are three main types of cenotes: open, semi-open, and cave cenotes, each offering a distinct experience. While most cenotes boast fresh water, those near the ocean may contain a mixture of fresh and saltwater due to their underground connections.

Gran Cenote

Among the many cenotes near Tulum, Gran Cenote stands out as a popular choice. Just 5 kilometers from the town center, this cenote features crystal-clear waters inhabited by graceful turtles. Its unique layout includes two pools connected by a cave, adding an element of intrigue to your exploration. To fully enjoy this natural wonder without the crowds, we recommend arriving early in the morning. The entrance fee is 180 MXN (approximately 7.50 EUR).

Cenote Calavera

Another captivating option is Cenote Calavera, aptly named for its skull-like appearance. This intimate cenote boasts three holes for adventurous jumps into its refreshing waters. While snorkeling is not advisable due to limited visibility, the thrill of leaping into the cenote's depths promises an exhilarating experience. Similar to Gran Cenote, arriving early is advisable to avoid crowds, as space is limited in this smaller cenote. Located just 3 kilometers from Tulum's center, it shares the same road as Gran Cenote, making it easily accessible. The entrance fee for Cenote Calavera is 100 MXN (approximately 4 EUR).

Tulum Ruins

Discover the rich history of the Mayan civilization at the Tulum Ruins, where ancient temples overlook the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. The Tulum Ruins entrance fee is around $95 pesos (~$6 USD) per person for visitors. If you stay at Azulik or Papaya Playa Project this is within walking distance.

When it comes to navigating the vibrant streets of Tulum, there's one mode of transportation that reigns supreme: the bicycle. As you explore this coastal paradise, you'll quickly notice that bikes are ubiquitous, offering a convenient and eco-friendly way to traverse between the bustling downtown area, known as the "pueblo," and the idyllic beachfront, aptly dubbed the "playa."

Consider renting a car or utilizing local taxis and shuttle services to explore Tulum and its surrounding areas with ease. While taxis remain a viable option for those seeking convenience, the bustling traffic along the main beach road can lead to inevitable delays and mounting expenses. 

Mosquitos in Tulum

The number one tip for travelers venturing to Tulum is to arm themselves with ample mosquito spray. These relentless insects seem to defy time, persistently buzzing around day and night, unlike their nocturnal counterparts in other destinations. What's more, Tulum's mosquitoes are masters of stealth, making their presence known only after they've left their mark with a well-timed bite. To ensure a comfortable and itch-free experience, be sure to apply mosquito spray liberally and frequently throughout your stay in Tulum. In Hotels like Nomade they use insect spray and incense to help prevent mosquitos around the rooms and hotel area.

Tulum Seaweed

Tulum, renowned for its breathtaking Caribbean beaches, holds a hidden secret beneath its azure waters—a seasonal occurrence of brown algae, known as seaweed. From mid-May to mid-October, Tulum's pristine shores transform as vast expanses of brown algae blanket the coastline.

The prevalence of brown algae is particularly pronounced along the beaches of Cancun and Tulum, where rising water temperatures create optimal conditions for their proliferation. As the algae multiply exponentially, the beaches become inundated, posing a challenge for locals who tirelessly labor to clear the masses using pitchforks and wheelbarrows. Despite their efforts, the algae reappear with relentless persistence, requiring daily maintenance to ensure the beaches remain usable for visitors.

While the winter months offer some respite from the seaweed invasion, with fewer occurrences from June to September, the disparity between seasons is significant. Travelers planning a visit to Tulum are advised to stay informed about the current seaweed situation, as the severity can vary from year to year.
