Rated as a moderate-level hike, it's actually fairly easy and doable for all levels of hikers. And it's short too, taking just a couple of hours to complete, so you can take it slow and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Kayaking in Bergsfjorden Senja
Kayaking on the west coast of Senja is a surreal experience, unlike anything else in Norway. The stunning turquoise water and white sandy beaches could easily be mistaken for a tropical paradise, but don't let that fool you. The snow-covered massifs in the background are a clear reminder that we are much further north. The best part? You can take a dip in the chilly eight-degree water and feel truly alive.
Exploring Senja by kayak is a must-do activity. The archipelago is incredibly beautiful and colorful, earning it the nickname "Caribbean of the North." As you paddle, you can spot starfish, sea urchins, cod, and pike in the water below, while eagles, gulls, and terns soar above. The real magic lies in the feeling of being at one with nature - here, we are entirely on nature's terms. In these waters, seals, killer whales, whales, and porpoises coexist. In the air, the sea eagle rules. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a killer whale on the horizon.
We rented kayaks and gear from a local provider, which was perfect for us since we like to explore on our own. If you prefer, they also organize guided tours on request. Keep in mind that kayaking in Bergsfjorden will be on open water with strong underwater currents and sometimes big waves, so be prepared for changing weather conditions. If you're not experienced with open water kayaking, think twice before venturing out on your own.
Getting to Senja
The two closest airports to Senja are Bardufoss (BDU) and Tromso Airport (TOS). From Bardufoss, it's just a one-hour drive to get to the island, while from Tromso, you can expect a 2 hour 40-minute drive.
If you're visiting during the summer months, there are two main ferry lines that connect Senja for visitors. The first one is from Andenes (Vesteralen Islands) to Gryllefjord (Senja). The second option is from Bothnam (Senja) to Brensholmen (outside Tromso). With these ferry options, your entry points into the island multiply, making it easier to organize a shorter drive from Tromso or from the Lofoten & Vesteralen Islands via Andenes.
Facts About Senja
Let me tell you some cool facts about Senja - Norway's second-largest island, which is located between Lofoten and Tromsö. The locals here have always lived off fishing, and you can still find old whale skulls in some of the small fjord villages. Although the population is just under 8,000, this number increases during high season, both summer and winter, as Senja is a magnet for hikers, skiers, and fishing enthusiasts. With its stunning mountains and breathtaking views, it's no wonder why!

Renting a car is definitely the way to go if you want to explore all the stunning spots on the island without any hassle. And trust me, you don't want to miss out on the most beautiful views! When it comes to car rental companies in Norway, I personally recommend Sixt, or you can always compare prices and options on AutoEurope to find the best deal for you. When to Go to Senja
Winter in Senja is an extraordinary experience! Above the Arctic Circle, there are periods where the sun never rises, and polar night on Senja lasts from November to January. Don't worry, even on the darkest day, there are still a couple of hours of beautiful blue light. So you will have some time to enjoy the island in daylight. And at night, prepare to be amazed by the northern lights! But if you are a fan of the sun, then you should plan to visit Senja from May to July, during the Midnight Sun period. This is the time of year when the sun never sets, and you can enjoy hiking at midnight while still basking in the sun's warmth. Trust me, it's a magical experience!
Senja Accommodation
I'd strongly advise you to spend a few nights in Senja instead of making a long day trip from Tromsø. Trust me, it's totally worth it. You can easily spend two nights and have a full day to explore this magnificent island, but if you have more time, go ahead and stay a little longer. As for accommodation, you have two options: either pitch your tent and go wild camping, or treat yourself to a cozy stay at Hamn i Senja. It's your call!
