Hiking to Střmen Castle

The journey to the ruins of Střmen Castle involves climbing 300 steps, leading to a breathtaking viewing platform. For many hikers, the final ascent up a narrow, steep ladder provides an adrenaline rush. If you're afraid of heights, this part of the hike might be challenging, but the panoramic view from the top is well worth the effort.

Exploring the Teplice Rocks and Hrad Střmen

To fully appreciate the Teplice Rocks, plan to spend at least three hours exploring the Teplice circuit. Along this trail, you'll encounter bizarre and aptly named rock formations such as the Caterpillar, Butcher’s Axe, and the Golem. The highlight of the hike is undoubtedly the climb to the ruins of Střmen Castle, now a viewing platform offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.

Your hike will also take you under the massive, smooth Guard Tower, a prominent symbol of the Teplice Rocks. At the Sibiř fork in the trail, ascend the stone steps across the Great Temple Square to the Stone Chapel. Squeeze through a narrow passageway into the Lion’s Cage, and you'll find yourself in Krakonoš’ Garden, surrounded by the most famous rock formations in the Teplice Rocks, including Rock Crown, the Church, Martin’s Walls, and the Rock Temple. The scenery here is so captivating that you won't know where to look first.

Historical Background of Střmen Castle

Perched atop a high rock at the beginning of the Teplice Rocks, the ruins of Střmen Castle are a testament to medieval fortification. Although little remains of the castle today, it is believed to have been constructed in the 13th century and served a defensive role along with the nearby Adršpach. The castle was plundered during the Hussite Wars and eventually abandoned in the late 16th century after being a refuge for marauding knights.

The castle was likely made entirely of wood, with the inaccessible rock formations serving as natural fortifications. Today, the rock on which the castle once stood is a popular viewpoint, offering one of the few opportunities to observe the Teplice Rocks from above. The highest viewing point is over 600 meters above sea level, providing stunning vistas of the surrounding area, including views of the Javoří Mountains.

Getting to Hrad Střmen Castle

This unique destination is located 10 minutes away from the Poland border or 2-3 hours by car from Prague City. Střmen Castle can be accessed from Střmenské podhradí, which offers several hotels, restaurants, parking, and public transport options. Teplice nad Metují is approximately 2 km away, accessible via the red or blue TZ trail. From the entrance to Teplice Rocks, it's about 1 km to the turnoff under Střmen along the blue TZ trail.

The ruins are situated along the paid sightseeing route in Teplice Rock City, which is 5.9 km long. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance, and the route continues past Střmen, winding through remarkable rock formations to the mountain climber's hut, U Skalní nevěsty, from where an unforgettable circuit begins through Temple Square, rock walls, domes, and ravines.

Střmen Parking and Entrance Fee

Parking and entrance fees are around 10 euros for two people. Opening times during summer is usually between 8.00-18.00. The hike from the parking lot to the stairs leading up to the castle takes approximately 20 minutes and is quite easy.
