Getting to Lago di Braies can be an adventure in itself. The lake is accessible by car, but during the peak summer months, restrictions are in place to manage the traffic flow. These restrictions usually apply between mid-July and mid-September, during which time the access road is closed to private vehicles between 9 AM and 4 PM. If you plan to visit during these months, it’s essential to either arrive early, late in the afternoon, or use public transportation.

Lago di Braies is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you hope to experience. For photographers seeking the most vibrant colors, the second half of October is ideal. If hiking is your goal, plan to visit between mid-June and October. For those simply wanting to see the lake in all its glory, May to November is the best window, as the lake is usually frozen and covered in snow outside of these months.

Parking at Lago di Braies

Parking near Lago di Braies is limited, and it’s important to plan ahead. There are four car parks along the road leading to the lake, each with its own pros and cons.

P1 Parcheggio Lago di Braies: Located 6 km from the lake, this lot is ideal if you plan to catch a bus to the lake. Parking costs €6 per day.
P2 Parcheggio Lago di Braies: A 10 minute walk from the lake, this is the most economical option, costing €6 per day. Campers pay €12 per day and €8 overnight.
P3 Parcheggio Lago di Braies: Just 100 meters walk from the lake, this lot offers electric car charging stations. Campers are charged €8 for the first three hours, with a total of €25 for 24 hours.
P4 Parcheggio Lago di Braies: The closest and most expensive option, this lot can be pre-booked during high season to avoid road restrictions.

Hiking Around Lago di Braies

While many visitors stop at the boat jetty just 100 meters from the parking lot, Lago di Braies offers a perfect introduction to the hiking trails of the Dolomites. Despite the serene images you might see online, the area around Lago di Braies is well-developed. A large hotel sits on the shoreline, along with a quaint chapel and the famous boat jetty where you can rent rowboats. There are also small restaurants, souvenir shops, and plenty of parking spaces with paid toilets.

Rowboats can be rented on a first-come, first-served basis, with prices currently at €50 for 30 minutes. Pre-booking is only available for special occasions, such as photo productions, and comes with an even higher price tag.
