The weather can be a bit tricky due to the two monsoon seasons, but fear not! The best time to hit the west and south coasts is from December to March, while the east coast shines between April and September. If you’re lucky enough to be there in April, you’ll get to experience the vibrant Sinhala & Tamil Nadu “New Year” festival—a week-long celebration that will satisfy every foodie’s cravings.

Just a heads up, temperatures in coastal areas are warm with humidity, but if you venture into the hill country, pack some cozy layers as the evenings can get chilly.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Language: Sri Lanka has two official languages—Sinhala and Tamil. However, English is widely spoken in the main tourist areas, making communication easy.

Currency: The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is the currency of Sri Lanka.

Credit Cards & ATMs: Credit and debit cards are widely accepted across Sri Lanka, even in smaller towns. But it’s always wise to have some rupees in your pocket. ATMs are plentiful, making it easy to withdraw cash using foreign bank cards.

Plugs: The plugs in Sri Lanka come in three types—D, M, and G. Voltage is 230 V, and frequency is 50Hz. Remember to grab a universal adapter (preferably with surge protection) and a converter for your hairdryers and hot tools.

Safety: Sri Lanka is a safe haven for solo female travelers. While the country has experienced isolated incidents of terrorism, they are not targeted at tourists. Just stay aware and embrace common-sense precautions.
