Zurich Airport welcomes you with efficiency and warmth, setting the tone for the unforgettable journey ahead. As you step off the plane, you're greeted by the crisp Alpine air and the promise of adventure in one of the world's most picturesque countries. After clearing customs and collecting your luggage, it's time to kick off your Swiss escapade. Zurich Airport offers seamless connections to the city center, whether you choose to hop on a train, catch a taxi, or opt for a rental car. For the ultimate freedom to explore at your own pace, we recommend picking up your rental car directly at the airport.
Once you've secured your wheels, take a moment to soak in the sights and sounds of Zurich. As Switzerland's largest city, Zurich is a bustling metropolis with a rich tapestry of history, culture, and gastronomy. Explore the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, where medieval charm meets contemporary flair. Marvel at the iconic landmarks such as the Grossmünster Cathedral and the Fraumünster Church, adorned with stunning stained glass windows designed by Marc Chagall.
After a leisurely stroll through the city center, treat yourself to a taste of Swiss cuisine at one of Zurich's many culinary hotspots. Indulge in traditional fondue or sample decadent Swiss chocolates, savoring every delicious bite. As the sun sets over the Limmat River, it's time to bid adieu to Zurich and hit the road towards your first destination: Klausen Pass. Buckle up and prepare for an epic journey through the Swiss countryside, where snow-capped peaks and emerald valleys await around every bend.
Whether you're embarking on a solo adventure, a romantic getaway, or a family road trip, Zurich serves as the perfect starting point for your Swiss odyssey.
Day 1: Drive From Zurich to Klausen Pass
Our journey kicks off with the rugged beauty of Klausen Pass. This stunning drive in the Central Swiss Alps connects Altdorf in the canton of Uri with Linthal in the canton of Glarus. Despite not being among the highest alpine passes, the Klausen Pass offers a thrilling experience with its 136 curves and challenging terrain. As we wind through the mountains, we're treated to breathtaking views of cascading waterfalls and panoramic vistas. A short hike to one of the waterfalls allows us to feel the spray on our faces, immersing us in the natural beauty of the region.
The drive from Zurich to the Klausen Pass takes just an hour, making it an easily accessible highlight on our route. The road features a mix of forested sections, alpine meadows, and historic cobblestone pavement, providing a glimpse into the pass's storied past. We navigate through tunnels and serpentines, marveling at the granite walls and plateaus along the way. For those seeking the stunning Berglistüber waterfall, located a few kilometers from Linthal, a short walk from the former Bergli restaurant offers an awe-inspiring sight. Tons of water cascade down into a small lake before continuing as the Fätschbach river. While it's considered one of Switzerland's most beautiful waterfalls, walking behind it should be done with caution.
One of the most memorable aspects of the Klausen Pass is its accessibility. Many of its scenic viewpoints are just a short distance from the road, allowing us to capture stunning photos of waterfalls and mountain vistas. Whether driving through with the top down or pausing for a hike, the Klausen Pass offers an unforgettable experience that showcases the natural beauty of Switzerland's alpine landscapes.
Day 2: Bath in Cheese in Engelberg's Unique Wellness Experience at Mount Titlis
A short drive brings you to Engelberg, home to Mount Titlis and its unique wellness offerings. Indulge in a rejuvenating whey bath made of cheese at the foot of the mountain, absorbing the natural goodness of Switzerland's dairy products. Let the healing properties work their magic as you relax amidst the serene alpine setting.
Day 3: Augstmatthorn Hike
Embarking on the Hardergrat Trail between Suggiture and Augstmatthorn is an adventure not to be missed. While typically a full-day hike, we discovered a shorter path to the most scenic ridge, making it accessible even for those with limited time. During our journey, my travel companion was unfortunately injured, prompting me to tackle the hike solo. Ascending straight up the mountain to the ridge and then back down further along the ridge, I was rewarded with breathtaking views and an unforgettable experience. This hike is an absolute must for anyone visiting Switzerland and ranks among the top hikes we've ever undertaken. The trail offers unparalleled vistas high above Lake Brienz and the city of Interlaken, culminating at the summit of Augstmatthorn. From this vantage point, you'll be treated to panoramic views of one of Switzerland's most stunning landscapes.
To embark on this adventure, start by parking at the Jägerstübli, Lombachalp, located just 20 minutes north of Interlaken. From there, head southeast along the path, passing through various cattle gates. After approximately one mile, the path will split; veer north (left) to ascend the steep dirt path toward Augstmatthorn. Upon reaching the summit, take in the awe-inspiring view before beginning your descent. Peel southwest (left) along the ridge when it forks, retracing your steps to enjoy another viewpoint at Suggiture. As you continue your descent, marvel at the steep outcroppings and follow the mountainside path until it rejoins the initial trail, leading you back to your starting point.
Prepare for an adventure of a lifetime as you traverse the Hardergrat Trail, immersing yourself in the natural beauty of Switzerland's alpine landscapes.
Day 4: Stay at The Cambrian Adelboden
Reward yourself with a luxurious retreat in Adelboden at The Cambrian. Nestled amidst lush meadows and towering peaks, this alpine village offers the perfect setting for relaxation. Check into the hotel and unwind with stunning mountain views and world-class views. Whether you choose to indulge in spa treatments or simply bask by the pool, serenity awaits. While the service by the staff unfortunately wasn't very good during our stay, the location itself is stunning.
Day 5: Drive Furka Pass and Explore Rhone Glacier
Optional Extension: Swim and Tan in Lavertezzo's Riverside
For those seeking additional adventure or relaxation, consider extending your route to Lavertezzo. Our stop in Lavertezzo was nothing short of idyllic, with perfect warm and sunny weather adding to the charm of this picturesque village nestled in the Verzasca valley, north of Locarno in southern Switzerland. Lavertezzo is renowned for its stunning river with crystal-clear waters, making it a beloved spot for swimming and sunbathing on hot summer days. As we arrived, we were greeted by the inviting waters of the river, beckoning us to take a refreshing dip. While there are plenty of places along the riverbank to splash and swim, the most popular spot is at Lavertezzo itself.
Here, we spent several lazy hours soaking in the sun, cooling off in the icy pools, and exploring the rugged rocks that line the riverbank. One of us daredevils also decided to performing flips off the iconic two-arch bridge, adding an element of excitement to our day, though it's not for the faint of heart due to its height.
Accessing the swimming area is easy, with parking available next to the river. A short walk over the bridge leads you to the riverside, where you can pick your way through boulders to find the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings. However, it's important to note that this is a wild river, not a monitored swimming area, so caution is advised. The water remains icy cold even in the middle of summer, making it perfect for a refreshing swim on the hottest of days. Be sure to watch children carefully and choose your swimming spot wisely, as some parts of the river may be more challenging than others.
Departure: Zurich Farewell
As your journey draws to a close, bid farewell to Switzerland's breathtaking landscapes and warm hospitality. Reflect on the memories made during your summer road trip as you return to Zurich. Return your rental car and board your flight home, carrying with you the moments of adventure, relaxation, and beauty that define a Swiss summer road trip.
