Picture this: you're standing on a rugged rock ledge, 700 meters (that's over 2,000 feet!) above the turquoise abyss of Ringedalsvatnet Lake. The wind whistles past, and your heart races with excitement and accomplishment. That's the magic of Trolltunga, and I'm here to spill all the deets on how to make your trek absolutely epic.

When to go: June 1 to September 30 (without a guide). At all other times of the year you must hike with a guide.

Getting to Trolltunga

Alright, let's start with the basics. Trolltunga is nestled in Norway's stunning Hordaland region. First things first, you've got to make your way to the charming town of Odda. From Odda's center, take route RV13 to Tyssedal (6 km). Turn right, follow signs to Trolltunga – which is a 30-minute drive to Skjeggedal. Whether you're arriving from Bergen or Oslo, the journey itself is an adventure with awe-inspiring fjord views.

Starting Point

Starting from Skjeggedal you have the option to park your car at P2, handle both road toll and parking fee at the P2 Skjeggedal parking machine (NOK 500). The full round-trip hike from here spans 27 kilometers and involves a formidable ascent of approximately 800 meters. Brace yourself for a 10-12 hour journey, including well-deserved breaks along the way.

Opting for the Mågelitopp trailhead shaves the distance to a total of 20 kilometers, with an ascent of around 320 meters. You have the option to secure your parking spot at P3 Mågelitopp, but remember to do it in advance – it's limited! Before heading up, pay the road toll (NOK 200) at the P2 Skjeggedal parking machine. Book your parking spot here.

Another option if you're keen to kick off your hike from the uppermost parking lot, P3 Mågelitopp, is to catch a shuttle bus from P2 Skjeggedal to get there (NOK 150 one-way). This is what we did and we managed to catch the latest bus around 6-7pm / 18.00-19.00. It's worth to mention that you do have to walk back approx. 10km from P3 to P2 on your way down if deciding to start your hike later in the afternoon. Anticipate a 6-10 hour trek via this route.

Trail to Trolltunga

Heading out early is recommended for this long hike. However, our late start turned out well, as we enjoyed clear skies after foggy conditions. So, if you're fit and quick, a late start can work.

The trail becomes gentler after the initial 1 km climb. Small climbs follow as you continue, and the granite face marks a notable point. Though there are a few more ascents, they're manageable. It's not the elevation, but the length that's the challenge.

We even brought our 11-month pup, who handled it fine. The route showcases snow patches, lake views, and boulder-strewn paths. Trail markers make navigation easy.

Views at Trolltunga

The sights from Trolltunga and the lake were breathtaking. Lucky for us, there weren't many people around, so we didn't have to wait for our turn on the ledge. Our late arrival seemed to be the key – we outsmarted the crowds.

Descending to the Troll's Tongue involves gripping metal handles and stepping onto the rock. The rock slightly tilts downward, adding a hint of excitement. It's wide enough to walk comfortably, but be careful with your footing, especially in unfavorable weather or slippery conditions.
