The archipelago is home to a diverse array of wildlife, from playful seals popping their heads above water to a variety of birds soaring high above. Sankt Anna Archipelago is a hidden gem on Sweden's east coast, and I knew I had to explore its beauty up close. I'm about to take you with me on my unforgettable self-made kayaking trip in the stunning Sankt Anna and Gryt Archipelago. This trip was the epitome of wanderlust, and I can't wait to share all the details with you!
Boat Taxi to Gryt Archipelago
After a three-hour drive from Stockholm to Fyrudden in Söderköping, we were greeted with windy and rainy weather. Due to the weather we decided to take a boat taxi to Harstena to cut short our journey, and it turned out to be a fantastic idea. The boat taxi was a quick 15-minute ride compared to the 1.5-hour ferry or 3-hour by kayak, saving us time and hassle. Nestled on the western side of Sankt Anna, Gryt is a tranquil paradise that feels like a secret oasis.
Kayaking Starting Point on Harstena Island
We reached the picturesque island of Harstena, and our first stop was a local restaurant called Loftet. While we waited for the weather to improve, we relished a delicious lunch. As soon as the skies cleared up, it was game on! We inflated the Kokopelli kayak and got all our gear ready. Oh, did I mention the mouthwatering freshly caught and smoked peppered salmon we brought with us for dinner from the smokery? It was a treat beyond words, and we couldn't resist taking some back home as well.
Kayaking with My Dog in Sankt Anna & Gryt Archipelago
Guess what? My furry friend joined us on this adventure too! It was his first time kayaking, and he was a bit nervous, but with his Ruffwear life vest, he took on the challenge like a champ. Together, we paddled for about 30 minutes, crossing the ocean between islands, until we found our sheltered island escape. Some islands were so tiny they could fit just a few curious seagulls, while others were large enough to house a cozy cabin and a mini forest. The view was awe-inspiring, and it was the perfect island to set up camp and store the kayak.
Camping on a Secret Island in Sankt Anna
As the evening sun painted the sky with vibrant hues, we knew we were in for a magical night. With the ocean breeze caressing our faces, we settled into our cozy tent. The weather forecast promised clear skies, and we woke up to a breathtaking sunrise and a perfect morning. Breakfast and tanning by the water added the cherry on top of our kayaking cake.
Exploring Harstena
Back at Harstena, we wandered through the charming village that looked straight out of a storybook, reminding us of Bullerbyn. Our adventure wouldn't be complete without savoring some delicious cinnamon buns at the local café. A sweet treat for sweet memories!
