KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

If you’re an adventurous traveler, Norway should be at the top of your list. But before you start packing your bags, there are a few things you need to know.

First and foremost, Norway is all about natural beauty – from the majestic fjords to the towering mountains and stunning glaciers. But be warned, Norway is known for being one of the most expensive countries in the world. So, make sure to have some extra cash on hand for food, accommodations, and activities. Trust me, it’s worth it! Secondly, the weather can be unpredictable, so don’t forget to pack warm and waterproof clothing, regardless of when you plan to visit. Are you dreaming of exploring the breathtaking Lofoten Islands or hiking to the famous Preikestolen or Trolltunga? As a seasoned traveler, I’ve been to both, and many more.

The best time to travel to Norway depends on your preferences and what you want to experience. If you want to experience the great outdoors and go hiking, skiing, or fjord exploring, then the summer months from June to August are perfect. Not to mention, you’ll have more daylight hours to take in all the sights!

But if you want to see the Northern Lights, the best time to go is from September to April, with peak season from December to February. Just remember to pack your warmest clothes!

And, if you’re looking to save some cash and avoid the crowds, the shoulder seasons of May and September are also fantastic options.

Or, if you’re a winter sports fanatic, you’ll love the ski season from November to May. Don’t forget to check out popular destinations like Geilo, Hemsedal, and Trysil.

No matter when you decide to go, Norway has plenty of activities to keep you entertained, from dog sledding to snorkeling with killer whales to visiting charming fishing villages.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Language: The official language of Norway is Norwegian, specifically Bokmål and Nynorsk. These are two written forms of the same language. English is widely spoken in Norway, especially in tourist areas, larger cities, and among younger generations.
Currency: The currency in Norway is the Norwegian Krone (NOK).

Credit Cards and ATMs: Credit cards are widely accepted in Norway, and you can use them to pay for almost anything, including small purchases like a cup of coffee or a snack. Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly accepted cards, but American Express and Diners Club are also accepted in some places. ATMs are also widely available throughout Norway, even in remote areas.

Plugs: In Norway, they use the Europlug (Type C) and the Schuko plug (Type F). The Europlug has two round pins, while the Schuko plug has two round pins and a grounding pin. It’s a good idea to bring a universal adapter that can accommodate both plug types.

Safety: Norway is generally considered a safe country to visit. The crime rate is low, and violent crime is rare. However, as with any destination, it’s important to take precautions to ensure your safety. Petty crime like pickpocketing can occur in tourist areas and public transportation, so it’s advisable to keep your belongings close and be aware of your surroundings. It’s also recommended to use common sense, such as avoiding walking alone in dark or unfamiliar areas at night. Overall, Norway is a safe and welcoming country for visitors.
