The Hesten Trail
Starting at the southern end of the charming town of Fjordgård, the Hesten trailhead awaits. The initial part of the trail is relatively easy, but the final stretch requires a bit more technical skill, although no specialized equipment is necessary. As you ascend, prepare to be amazed by the panoramic vistas of Segla to the south and the majestic Kongen peaks to the north. For the best experience, aim for an early morning or evening hike, especially during the summer when you can bask in the glorious 24-hour daylight.
Hesten Parking and Tips
At the time of our visit, parking was concentrated at the Segla trailhead, with a small fee payable by cash or card. However, we managed to find free street parking, but do double-check the latest information to avoid any parking mishaps.
Before you set off, make sure to equip yourself with sturdy hiking shoes, sufficient water, and check the weather forecast to ensure clear skies and a safe journey. The weather forecast can be found here. Not just to your own safety, also to guarantee the amazing view towards Segla, the sky should be clear.
Wild Camping Senja
There are a number of flat spots for camping on the Hesten mountain with a perfect view of the Segla mountain. I highly recommend this as you'll feel like you have the entire mountain to yourself, creating unforgettable memories. If you choose to camp during winter, remember to be fully prepared and bring a high-quality winter sleeping bag for added comfort and warmth.
Hesten Winter Approach
For the adventurous souls seeking a winter hike, Hesten offers an extra challenge. Exercise caution, especially near the ridge, as conditions can be more treacherous. However, the reward of having the mountain all to yourself is well worth it. Keep in mind that you won't find any visible hiking trail markers, so proceed with caution and rely on your navigational skills.
Bonus Hike to Segla
Extend your adventure by conquering the climb to Segla, starting from the school in the village of Fjordgård. The well-marked path is easily accessible, leading you to the summit. With a total elevation gain of nearly 600 meters, it's sure to get your heart pumping. As you ascend, stay to your right for safety, but keep an eye out for Instagram-worthy spots on your left, taking no unnecessary risks. The path will guide you to safe viewpoints.
Once you reach the summit, take a moment to soak in the breathtaking panoramic view before retracing your steps back down.
